    Q:  When do I need a building permit?

 

    A:  A building permit is needed for for any and all new building over 200 square feet, A permit is needed for installation of electrical systems, including alterations, repairs, replacement, equipment, appliance, fixtures, fittings and appurtenances. There are some exemption from a permit as follows:

            1.. Platforms or open decks not over any basement or story and not supporting roof or unusual loads.

                2. Repair or replacement of existing structure exterior finish, including but limited to, siding, roof covering, windows, doors and decorative trim.

                3. Interior repair and remodel that does not create new or increase existing habitable areas and that does not require plumbing, electrical or mechanical installations or alterations.

 

        Q.  Do I need a permit to put up a fence?

 

        A.  Yes. 

 

        Q.  Where do I get a permit and when should I get it?

 

        A.  Building and Fence Permits can be obtained at the City Clerk's Office, 103 N. Main Avenue, Monday - Wednesday, 6:45 a.m. - 4:15 p.m. or Thursday 6:45 a.m. - 6:15 p.m. You should apply for your permit at least two weeks prior to your scheduled start date.  The City needs this time to review your plans and ensure all City Codes are being followed.  Also if your plans to do meet City Code, there should be time to correct the problems and keep the construction on schedule.

 

        Q.  We have an inflatable swimming pool, do we need to put a fence up?

 

   A.  Yes, if it is over 18 inches in depth.  You will need a fence permit to construct the fence.

 

   Q.  I would like to discuss something with the City Council what do I need to do?

 

   A.  You will need to contact the City Clerk no later than 4:00 p.m. on the Monday prior to the next City Council meeting.  If you have any information you would like the Council to review prior to the meeting get it to the Clerk by the dead line stated above  so it can be included  in the Council packets.

 

 

   Q.  Where do I register to vote?

 

  A.  Voter Registrations forms can be obtained at the Alburnett City Clerk's Office or at the Linn County Auditor's website.  www.linncountyauditor.org

 

   Q.  If I would like to run for City Council and have my name on the ballet what do I need to do and when should I do it?

 

  A. Per State of Iowa Code, Section 376.1, a city shall hold a regular city election on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of each odd-numbered year (i.e. 2005, 2007, 2009). A Nomination Petition can be obtained at the City Clerk's office, usually by mid- August, per State of Iowa Code 376.4, The petition must be filed not more than seventy-one days and not less than forty-seven days before the date of the election, and must be signed by eligible electors equal in number to at least two percent of those who voted to fill the same office at the last regular city election, but not less than ten persons. (Only 10 signatures required on a petition for the City of Alburnett's Mayor/City Council petition) Nomination petitions shall be filed not later than five o'clock p.m. on the last day for filing.  When a Nomination Petition is taken out all the dates and deadlines are listed for that year's election.
